A pickup is a built-in sensor with an output for amplifying the sound. Most use the standard 6.3 mm jack found on professional audio equipment.

It is particularly useful for live playing or recording when you cannot isolate the sound of other instruments. A kalimba is relatively quiet, so an ordinary microphone can pick up a lot of unwanted sound, and you have to keep a consistent distance from it.
