You could ask this philosophical question about any instrument. Kalimbas, especially classic single-row models with familiar Western tunings, are intuitive and technically simple: hold the instrument and pluck the tines with two thumbs. Musical experience helps you move from sounds to music sooner. But if the instrument interests you, even the individual sounds will be enjoyable. Every note you play contributes to your musical development, even if you know no theory and are not deliberately trying to learn. ;)
