Kalimbas are generally quiet instruments, with an average volume no greater than an ordinary speaking voice. They are usually difficult to hear through walls. The loudest models played in an empty, resonant room may be audible through a moderately thick door.
Even with a very loud model or an amplified instrument, a high maximum volume can be an advantage: how loudly you actually play depends on how hard you pluck. You do not have to use the full volume!
A wide dynamic range, from soft to loud, gives you more expressive possibilities but also asks for more control. If you are used to an instrument that sounds much the same however hard you pluck, a more responsive kalimba may reveal unevenness in your playing.
