A kalimba needs no special maintenance. Like any object made of wood and metal, it should be kept away from moisture: do not play it in the rain or shower. Light, thin-walled hollow-body kalimbas need extra protection from moisture and sudden temperature changes, which can warp or crack the body. This may not noticeably affect the sound, but it is still unpleasant. When bringing a cold instrument indoors, keep it in a sealed bag until it reaches room temperature to prevent condensation. When moving it to a different environment, keep it protected at first so it can acclimatise gradually.
